Storage Manager Settings

Storage Manager Settings
Customize Storage Manager for your use.

There are settings defining the way Storage Manager operates. You can modify them any time you wish. Select Settings command at the File menu and Settings window will appear. There are few pages at the window:

  1. General page.
    • Scheduler - Here you can activate or stop the scheduler that runs periodical backups.
    • Select interface language - Select your native language in the drop-down list and reload the program.
    • Maximum log size - You can set the maximum size of a Backup Set's log file. When the size of a log file is exceeded, it will be renamed and the main log file starts again.
    • Launch backup as a separate process - By default, Storage Manager starts a new thread within the application to make a backup. Setting this checkbox to ON, allows the program to start a separate copy of Storage Manager to make the backup. This minimizes any disruptions to other copies of Storage Manager if they crash for any reason.
    • Automatically backup repair info after each backup session - Storage Manager can automatically backup repair information after each backup session on the same backup storage. So, you will have up-to-date repair information after each backup.

  2. Connections page.

During backup on a remote FTP Server, Storage Manager connects to InterNet. Setup your dial-up and proxy settings here.

There are two ways to establish a connection to the backup server:

    • Dial-up connection - Usually we use a "Dial-up connection" at home, or on the road. You have to select the name of your existing connection in the combo box "Connect using" and enter your username and password. Double click on "My Computer", then "Dial-up Networking" to setup the dial-up parameters.
    • Local network - Usually we use a "Local network" in a company or for a permanent connection to the Internet. Often companies use "proxy servers" to protect the local network from outside attacks. Contact your System Administrator to get information about your proxy servers.

  3. Encryption keys page.

You can manage encryption keys you use to encrypt backup archives.

    1. Generate (create) a new encryption key.
    2. Display a hint of the key.
    3. Print a key code of the key and import the key code back into the Software. It gives you one more level of insurance you won't lose your encryption keys

IMPORTANT NOTE: You MUST be very careful with your encryption keys.  If you lose them, you will NEVER restore your files.  That's why you MUST have few copies of them, and locate them in a few safe places (away of your computer). That's VERY IMPORTANT because you can restore your files only if you have the encryption keys!  Use Repair wizard to save encryption keys/repair information.

  4. Logs page.

An email can be sent after a backup process has finished. You can configure where the email log will be delivered by typing the email information. To disable feature, just leave "From/To:" field blank. You can use few e-mail addresses, but they must be separated by a semicolon (;). Storage Manager directly connects to a standard SMTP/POP3 server and sends an email message through it. Contact the system administrator of your SMTP/POP3 server for details.

You may need to specify your POP3 account because some email servers (like Yahoo!) need POP3 authorization to send an email message.

  5. Backup of open files page (Windows NT/2000/XP).

To backup open files you have to install a special kernel driver. Here you can install and uninstall this driver. You have to reboot to apply changes.
